The Last Time Congress Did Something Right? July 2nd, 1776

By Alex Garrett on 7/2/2024

After the debacle of the first Presidential debate of 2024, I immediately thought about what the Founding Fathers thought . This debate took place exactly a week before we celebrate the day America signed, sealed and delivered its Independence from King George and Great Britain .

Now, 248 years later , we have the current President Joe Biden and fmr. President -turned -2024 -hopeful Donald Trump end up debating not the issues of the time, but about their golf game. I do give credit to Trump for hitting Biden on some substantive issues , but Biden really devolved the whole thing with his poor and alarming performance.

To get a real sense of the FIERY debating that took place in Philadelphia leading up to July 4, 1776 , please watch the movie , 1776!

The Continental Congress voted on the resolution to declare Independence on July 2nd, 1776, and the Declaration itself was dated and signed on July 4th, 1776.

Debating raged on during the hot summer of 1776 . As written in Musings from the Mezzanine: “In the spring and summer of 1776, the Second Continental Congress gathered in Philadelphia to debate declaring independence from King George III and the British Parliament. Accounts from that time clearly convey the delegates’ fears about the possible consequences of fighting for independence: the American army, vastly outnumbered by British forces, could lose the war; their leaders could be executed as traitors; supporters could have their property confiscated; and the occupying British army could wreak havoc on towns and cities. But British rule wasn’t the only threat to life and liberty during this time. Disease posed yet another significant threat.” You can read more about the struggles the Continental Army and the colonies at the time faced here: https://nlmdirector.nlm.nih.gov/2022/07/06/celebrating-independence-day-fortitude-in-philadelphia-1776/#:~:text=In%20the%20spring%20and%20summer,III%20and%20the%20British%20Parliament.)

I don’t think the ongoing threats to today’s America has been fiercely debated enough and protesters clogging up bridges, tunnels and active traffic in American cities should not count. We need to channel the Founding Fathers , who wouldn’t let illegals run rampant and cause crime , but rather welcome them in through better means. They wouldn’t let Jewish people feel scared to be walking around , because they woild defend them.

All the anti -Americans that plan to protest and that pulled down statues of our Founding Fathers took the sacred right of Free Speech and have completely trashed it.

Today’s Congress doesn’t feel to be doing much about the issues of the day. I feel bad that the hard work of Rep. Malliotakis and Rep. Michael Lawler is overshadowed by the farthest parts of each party, something surely our Founding Fathers are frowning upon, and they would have prevented these far-Left and far-Right factions from taking control.

Let’s face it, the last time Congress did something right was voting to approve our Independence on 7/2/1776. To be in the room where it happened, Independence Hall, was a special feeling and it’s a generational feeling of hard work, history and teamwork that made us FREE ! 248 years later, let’s build on that collaboration and not tear it down!
